Lezing Europees Commissaris voor de Mensenrechten
Challenges to human rights in today’s Europe
Lecture by Nils Muižnieks
Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights
The current period represents what is most likely a critical turning point for human rights in Europe. Never before, since the end of the Second World War and the vision of peace which guided the founders of European construction, have the European human rights system and European integration been at such risk. The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Nils Muižnieks, will describe the different and serious challenges facing human rights and the European human rights system today.
The financial crisis, which hit the most vulnerable very hard; the crisis in and around Ukraine; migration and the lack of a European response; the fight against terrorism at the expense of human rights; backsliding on the rule of law in several member states. Commissioner Muižnieks will examine these challenges, as well as those facing human rights defenders, the media and journalists, giving concrete examples based on his country visits and thematic work.
