The Campus
Undergraduate Education Campus
Kulak has its own education and research profile which is complementary to the big urban campuses. Since September 2011, students of the faculties of Biomedical Sciences, Psychology and Educational Sciences, Science and Technology and Medicine have been able to obtain their bachelor’s degree at Kulak, whereas students of the faculties of Arts, Law, Business and Economics take the first two years of their bachelor’s degree in Kortrijk and generally continue their studies in Leuven. However, from the academic year 2013-2014 onwards, it will be possible to complete a bachelor's degree at Kulak for students of all our faculties.
Kulak is the only campus in Flanders where you can find all faculties or study programmes in one building complex. The architecture of our campus site with its interconnected spaces, set in a green oasis, creates a pleasant backdrop for friendly social contacts across the boundaries of faculties. Students of various disciplines sometimes take courses together. There are also education initiatives that support this interdisciplinary vision such as seminars given by political, socio-economic and scientific authorities. All these give our students a broader view on science and society.
By focussing on the crucial first years of an academic training and by maintaining relatively small groups of students per field, we are able to provide our students with optimal support and tuition in the best of environments. However, in the first place, students are invited to take initiative and responsibility. They support each other intensely, which leads to significantly higher passing rates in the first year compared to the other Belgian universities.
As a division of KU Leuven, our students are very much ‘part of Leuven’ here because we share the same programs, professors, and high standards of quality in education, research and service to the community. The campus has some 120 academics in residence, complemented with some 100 Leuven academics who regularly teach in Kortrijk. Our Alma Mater is an internationally renowned institution, with excellent education and research potentials and with strong networks, both locally and internationally.
Research Campus
Our campus invests in scientific research at international level. For bachelor students, this is a unique chance to get their first taste of scientific research.
Student-minded Campus
Student residences are concentrated on and around the campus and there is an active student life led by the student council (praesidium). New students make friends even before the start of the academic year during the introduction days.
